Donald Thomas Beatty was born on October 12, 1919 in Hancock, Iowa to Alvin T. and Rachel J. (Henry) Beatty. He graduated from the Hancock High School with the Class of 1937. He began farming west of Hancock and would continue to farm for the rest of his life.
Don joined the Army Air Corps and served during WWII from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was stationed in Europe with the 552nd Squadron of the Ninth Air Corps. He received six Bronze Stars and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Don married Beulavon Heft on August 29, 1945 in Hancock, Iowa. Three daughters were born to this union: Mary Kathleen, Joan, and Jane. He loved farming and his horses. He was a member of the Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association and was named Breeder of the Year several times. He believed in the importance of education, supporting his community and country, and he valued his independence.
Don and Beulavon moved to the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca in July of 2013 and this is where he died on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 having attained the age of 93 years, 10 months, and 23 days. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Max.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Beulavon Beatty of Avoca, Iowa; three daughters: Mary Kathleen Martin of Richmond, Virginia, Joan and her husband Loren Clayton of Omaha, Nebraska, and Jane and her husband Gregory Johnson of Carmel, Indiana; six grandchildren; brother, Bill Beatty and his wife Mildred of Atlantic, Iowa; sister-in-law Mary E. Beatty of Avoca; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Jonathan Heifner officiated the 10:30 A.M. funeral service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa on Monday, September 9, 2013. Shirley Pattee was the musician. Casket bearers were: Alex Beatty, Adam Beatty, Phil Enke, Tim Roskens, Dennis Loftis, Roy Bane, Steven Martin, and Tyler Johnson. Military Rites were conducted by the Fred Funston American Legion Post No. 227 in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Hancock, Iowa.
