Donald Edwin Bladt was born to Daniel P. and Ida Sophie (Holdorf) Bladt on November 24, 1920, in Pleasant Township, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Shelby Lutheran Church, in Shelby, Iowa. He attended country school until the eighth grade and then graduated with the class of 1938, in Shelby, Iowa.

Don married Pauline (Kasiske) on February 29, 1948, at the United Church of Christ in Minden, Iowa. They farmed in the Minden-Shelby area. They then made their home on their farm north of Shelby. They were the parents of five children - Steve, Daniel, Lori, David, and Larry.

For over fifty years, Don proudly served as Soil and Water Conservation Commissioner. He served ten years in West Pott and forty in Shelby, County. Don took his job seriously and did a great job. You would always see him early for the meeting and reviewing the agenda so he would be fully prepared. Don was definitely an excellent role model as commissioner. His interest in soil conservation started at a young age. In the fall of 1941, Don started to put in terraces with a plow on his dad’s farm. He was one of the first in the area to utilize the farming practices of minimum till, ridge till and no till. Don was very conscientious on soil conservation and did everything he could to preserve the land.

Don passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at Avoca Nursing and Rehab in Avoca, Iowa having attained ninety five years, four months and seventeen days. Don was preceded in death by his wife Pauline, parents Daniel and Ida, brothers: Elwin “Bud” Bladt and Willis Bladt grandson Nathan Bladt; sister in law Norma Bladt and niece Sharon Bladt .

He leaves to mourn his passing his children: Steve Bladt and his wife Peggy of Minden, IA; Daniel Bladt and his wife Leona of Shelby, IA; Lori Christensen of Shelby, IA; David Bladt and his wife Debra of Shelby, IA; Larry Bladt and his wife Collette of Shelby, IA; twelve grandchildren; numerous great- grandchildren, nephews, nieces and friends.
