Donald Carl Hipnar, son of Carl and Meta (Luth) Hipnar, was born on August 19, 1927 two miles east of Avoca, Iowa. He attended school in Walnut graduating with the class of 1945. After high school, Donald helped his father on the family farm.
In 1951, Donald was drafted into the United States Army and he served his country honorably during the Korean Conflict until his discharge. Donald then returned to Iowa to continue farming. On September 25, 1955, Donald was united in marriage to Marlene Lucille Nahkunst in Hamburg, Iowa. They made Council Bluffs their home for a short while after their marriage before moving to a farm outside of Shelby, Iowa in 1956. They were the parents of two children; Debra and Mike. They then made their home in Hancock, Iowa for several years.
Donald then began working for Zimmerman Farm Supply where he helped in the construction of grain bins on farms throughout southwest Iowa. He also later worked for the Pottawattamie County Road Department before his retirement. Donald and Marlene were longtime members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. He enjoyed working in his flower garden, attending garage sales and flea markets and making homemade wooden yard ornaments and helping at the Farmall Museum for several years in Avoca. Don’s passion was collecting and selling antique tools in his booth at the Carstens Farm Days Celebration as well as at other area events.
Donald and Marlene made their home in Avoca in 1975. Marlene died on September 25, 1996 on their forty-first wedding anniversary and Donald remained in Avoca until 2016 when he moved to Amelia Place apartments in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This is where he died on July 9, 2016 having attained the age of eighty-eight years, ten months and twenty days. In addition to his wife Marlene, Donald was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his daughter Debra Hipnar of Omaha, Nebraska and his son Mike Hipnar and his wife Carla and granddaughters Jessica and Ashley all of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his brothers: Glen Hipnar and his wife Marlene of Shelby, Iowa and Larry Hipnar and his wife Peggy of Blair, Nebraska; nieces and nephews, other family members and many friends.
