Donald Arthur Hopp was born on December 18, 1930 to Arthur and Jennie (Ogeson) Hopp in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They lived on a farm near Minden, Iowa, moving to Harlan when Don was two years old. He attended Harlan schools, participated in track, running the quarter mile and the mile relay, and graduated with the Class of 1949.
On July 6, 1948, Don was united in marriage to Carol Petersen in Jacksonville, Iowa. They had four children: Cynthia, Larry, Gary, and Kristie.
Don started Hopp Construction Company with his father, Art, doing road construction and grading, as well as soil conservation. He loved his border collies, all named Tippy, loved to maintain the Shelby County Speedway and watch stock car racing.
He supported and attended the Harlan Cyclone sporting events - football, basketball, and track, and was especially supportive of all the activities that his grandkids participated in. He had been a member of the United Congregational Church of Christ for many years.
Don became a resident of Salem Lutheran Nursing Home in Elk Horn, Iowa in March of 2013 and lived there until his death on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa. He had attained the age of eighty-five years, three months, and six days and was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Jennie, and wife Carol.
He is survived by his children: Cynthia and her husband Keith Hulsebus, Larry Hopp and his wife Linda, Gary Hopp and his wife Jodie, and Kristie Sterler all of Harlan, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren: Diane and her husband Don Petsche of Ankeny, IA, Sarah and her husband Travis Culp of Cummin, Georgia, Bryce Hopp and his wife Kelly of Harlan, David Hopp and his wife Misty of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Tom Hopp and his wife Kandie of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, Linnea and her husband Brad Ekin of Seattle, Washington, Breanne and her husband Josh Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska, Alyssa and her husband Joe Fernandez of Baltimore, Maryland, Taimon Wehr of Ankeny, Allan Hopp, Brett Hopp, and Daytona Wehr all of Harlan; seventeen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother Frank Hopp and his wife Sylvia of York, Pennsylvania; other family members and many friends.
