Donald Lee Johnston was born on February 14, 1927 to James and Edna (Strom) Johnston in Owatonna, Minnesota. He attended White Bear Lake High School and Fargo High School. He received his GED while in the military. He enlisted in the United States Navy and received an honorary discharge for his service during World War II in the South Pacific.
On October 22, 1949, Donald was united in marriage to Mary Ann Schmidt at St. Kevins Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Three children were born to this union: Tom, Kathy, and Richard.
After his military service, Donald worked as a parts manager for General Motors. The family lived in different locations including Fort Lauderdale, Florida, North Carolina, Missouri, and Pompano Beach, Florida, before settling in Harlan, Iowa. He retired in 1982 but continued to work part-time and enjoyed gardening.
Donald died on Thursday, August 22, 2013 having attained the age of eighty-six years, six months, and eight days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Ann in May of 2011, brothers Jim and Dick, and sisters: Mildred, Pauline, and Helen.
He is survived by his children: Tom Johnston of Omaha, Nebraska, Kathy and her husband Tom Tremmel of Harlan, Iowa, and Richard Johnston and his wife Christine of Clarinda, Iowa; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother Bob Johnston and his wife Karen of Sandpoint, Idaho; other family members and friends.
Margaret Schenck officiated the 10:30 AM memorial service on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Kathleen Kohorst accompanied vocalists Maryalyce Dotzler and Geralyn Greer.
