Donald G. Schechinger
December 7, 1960 — November 8, 2007
Donald Gerard Schechinger, son of Elmer and Margaret (Stessman) Schechinger was born on December 7, 1960 in Harlan, Iowa. He was one of fifteen children and had a twin brother, Ron. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Don attended school in Harlan, Iowa, and graduated from Harlan Community High School in 1980.
He was united in marriage to Debra Dea on April 9, 1988. Four children were born to this union: Molly, Justin, Elizabeth, and Annabel. After their marriage, they made their home near Harlan.
Throughout high school, Don worked for his father at Schechinger Seed Co. doing farming; conditioning soybeans and everything else that needed to be done. He continued to work there until the present time. When Don was not busy with work, he enjoyed helping Debra with all the housework including the laundry and dishes. Don also helped Debra with the maintenance of the garden they started together.
Don was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia for many years and later became a member of St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan where he spent many weekends ushering. In 1980, Don joined the Westphalia Volunteer Fire Department and continued to be a member even after becoming a member of the Harlan Fire Department.
Don died on Thursday, November 8, 2007, at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, having attained the age of forty-six years, eleven months, and one day. He is preceded in death by his father.
Don is survived by his wife of nineteen years, Debra Schechinger of Harlan; his children: Molly, Justin, Elizabeth, and Annabel Schechinger all of Harlan; his mother, Margaret Schechinger of Westphalia; his siblings: Connie and her husband Ron Carter, John Schechinger and his wife Cindy, Ray Schechinger and his wife Ann, Tom Schechinger and his wife Kay, Sharon and her husband Jim Bieker, Dan Schechinger and his wife Joan, Donna and her husband Galen Grabill, Ron Schechinger and his wife Konnie all of Harlan, Iowa, JoAnn and her husband Galen Schnack of Westphalia, Iowa, Glen Schechinger and his special friend, Denise Bever of Oakland, Iowa, Janice and her husband Chuck Assman of Earling, Iowa, Dean Schechinger and his wife Rita of Oakland, Lora and her husband Rick Zimmerman of Golden, Colorado, and Kevin Schechinger and his wife Tera of Oakland; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, November 12, 2007, at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Celebrant of the 11:00 AM mass was Rev. Bob Hoefler. Serving as casket bearers were Ben Bieker, Brad Schechinger, Charles Grabill, Noah Dea, Jeremy Schechinger, and Shane Schechinger. Honor Guard was the Westphalia Volunteer Fire Department and the Harlan Fire Department with interment at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
