Donald Nicholas Stein was born on December 6, 1955 to Carl and Helen (Leinen) Stein in Harlan, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm near Portsmouth and was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Harlan High School in 1974. While in high school, he was a state qualifier in wrestling and went on to attend Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa on a wrestling scholarship.
He began his working career at the Sears store in Council Bluffs, Iowa, but due to his love of cars and people, he soon became a car salesman. The remainder of his career was spent in automobile sales in the Omaha - Council Bluffs metro area.
On May 18, 1983, he was united in marriage to Teresa Barnhill. They had one son, Bradley, who was Don’s pride and joy.
Don was a soft-hearted man that enjoyed fishing (especially with his son), bowling, billiards, and organizing as well as participating in Stein family pitch games.
After recovering from a head injury in early 2007, Don retired in Harlan and two years later moved to Glenwood, Iowa, where he died at his residence on Friday, January 2, 2015 having attained the age of fifty-nine years and twenty-seven days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert.
He is survived by his son Brad Stein of Tampa, Florida; brothers and sisters: Dorothy Gross of Glenwood, Iowa, Al Stein and his wife Jeanne of Lansing, Iowa, Jim Stein and his wife Darla of Storm Lake, Iowa, Pete Stein and his wife Patty of Portsmouth, Iowa, Pat and her husband Randy Pash of Harlan, Iowa, Carl Stein and his wife Sandy of Odessa, Missouri, Bill Stein and his wife Laurie of Thurman, Iowa, Ken Stein and his wife Julie of Portsmouth, Larry Stein and his wife Carol of Portsmouth, Paul Stein and his wife Denise of Amana, Iowa, and Mary and her husband John Murtaugh of Harlan, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
