Donna L. Mahlberg
March 27, 1933 — March 25, 2014
Madonna “Donna” Louise Mahlberg was born on March 27, 1933 to Frederick and Patricia (Buckley) Hoffmann on a farm near Panama, Iowa. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from St. Mary’s with the Class of 1949.
On January 9, 1960, Donna was united in marriage to Michael Mahlberg at St. Mary’s in Panama. They had one daughter born to them, Mary Pat.
Donna worked as a cook at Kohles Café and for St. Mary’s School. She then spent thirty-five years as the office manager for Panama Fertilizer.
She loved to watch baseball and basketball on television and keep up with current events. She was often outspoken but always considerate. She was a loyal resident of Panama having served on the town council, St. Mary’s parish council, and even having Panama on her license plates.
Donna endured several health issues but remained in her home until very recently becoming a resident of Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling. This is where she died on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 having attained the age of eighty years, eleven months, and twenty-six days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mike, sister Mary Ann, and brother Norbert.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Pat Mahlberg of Council Bluffs, Iowa; her best friend Marty Schmidt of Panama, Iowa; brother David Hoffmann and his wife Ruth of Earling, Iowa; sisters Jeanette and her husband Mark Clifford of Omaha, Nebraska and Jean and her husband Allan Stinn of Noblesville, Indiana; other family members and many friends.
The 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. John Dorton with Rev. Michael Peters, Rev. Paul Koch, and Rev. Larry Hoffmann as concelebrants on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Musicians were Mary Jo Schmitz, Samantha Schmitz and Jodi Wingert. Serving as casket bearers were Darrell Mahlberg, Pat Hoffmann, Richard Hoffmann, Jim Mahlberg, John Stinn, John Henscheid, Paul Stinn and Lynn Schmitz. Burial was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Panama.
