Doris Evon Lewis was born in Swea City, Iowa, June 18, 1922, the daughter of William and Bertha Weston Batt. She was raised in the Kossuth County area receiving her early education in the rural schools before graduating from Algona High School with the class of 1939. On June 18, 1939, Doris was united in marriage with Robert Franklin Lewis in Fairmont, Minnesota. Their union was blessed with eleven children. They made their home in Kossuth County where she was employed for a time at the Burt Creamery. In 1958 they moved to Westside, Iowa, where they owned and operated the Turn-In-Motel until 1972. After the closing of the motel, Doris assisted her husband in his ministry at the Community of Christ Church in Denison and his construction business until their retirement in 1990. They spent their retirement years in Westside where Doris enjoyed making and selling crafts, doing embroidery, working crossword puzzles and most of all, cherished times spent with family. She was an active member of the Community of Christ Church in Denison. Robert died April 21, 2005, and Doris remained at her home in Westside. In January of 2014, she moved to Regency Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Carroll, Iowa, a facility her husband had built during his construction years. It was there that Doris died Wednesday morning, January 4, 2017. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 94 years, 6 months and 16 days. Including her parents, William and Bertha Batt, and her husband, Robert, Doris was also preceded in death by five children: Robert Gene, John Paul, James Dean, Deloris Eileen and LeRoy Keith; daughter-in-law, Karen Lewis; a granddaughter: Cyndi Blanco; two great-grandsons: Kaden Wilkerson-Lewis and Scotty Lewis: eleven siblings: William Batt, George Batt, Edna Batt, Robert Batt, Helen Simpson, Ruth Hauenstein, Verne Batt, John Batt, Orville Batt, Edith Potter, and twin of Doris, Dorothy Edwards. Those remaining to cherish her memory include six children: Jerry (Jo) Lewis of Westside, Iowa, Richard (Ruth) Lewis of Des Moines, Iowa, JoAnn (Dennis) Hanson of Boone, Iowa, Donald Lewis of Manning, Iowa, Terry (Paulette) Lewis of Great Bend, Kansas, and Jeanette (William) Greteman of Westside, Iowa, twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-four great grandchildren; fifty-five great great grandchildren; two great great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, her church family, other relatives and friends.Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at the Community of Christ Church in Denison, Iowa, with Elder Ted Morris and Elder Carrie Morris officiating. Music for the service was provided by Sheila Reitan singing “In the Garden”, “Beyond the Sunset” and “In the Sweet By and By” with Carrie Morris as accompanist. The grandchildren of Doris served as her pallbearers. Following the service the family invited everyone to remain at the church and join them for fellowship and a luncheon.
