Doris Marie Ploen

Doris Marie Ploen was born on August 6, 1927, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was the daughter of Oliver Schmidt and Ella Danker Schmidt. She was raised on a farm south of Minden, Iowa, and attended York Center Country School through 8th grade and was a 1945 graduate of Minden High School. She continued her education at Commercial Extension in Omaha, Nebraska, and graduated in 1947. She worked for five years at Pottawattamie Mutual Insurance Company in Council Bluffs.
On February 17, 1951, she was married to Lester William Ploen, meeting him at a dance in Minden, Iowa. They were married at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Council Bluffs, Iowa. To this union were born a daughter, Sylvia Diane in 1952 and son, Larry William in 1956. An infant son preceded her in death in 1955.
Doris was a member of Neighborhood Club for many years. She was confirmed and a member of the Minden Congregational Church and joined the Shelby Methodist Church in 1965. Doris enjoyed her life as a farm wife and was known for her pie baking skills. She was a good friend and correspondent, sending many cards and notes and letters. She was a caring and loving mother to her two children, supporting them in every way. She was delighted with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Doris died on Saturday, November 26, 2016, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha after a short illness, having achieved the age of eighty-nine years, three months, and twenty days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, infant son, and her older sister, Beatrice Briggs.
She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia and her husband Chuck Terlouw of West Des Moines, Iowa; son Larry Ploen of Shelby, Iowa; granddaughters Amy and her husband John Tracy and their children Joclyn and Jack Tracy of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Laura Terlouw and her husband Jason Buttorf and their children Will and Morgan Buttorf of San Francisco, California; twin sister Doloris Mauer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; other family members and friends.
