Doris Marie Schuning, daughter of Bert and Helen (Turner) Niklasen, was born on June 1, 1938 in Kimballton, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa. She attended country school at Sharon #4 through the eighth grade then attended Elk Horn-Kimballton where she graduated with the Class of 1956. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls, Iowa, graduating in 1958 and began her teaching career with the second grade in Avoca, Iowa. She was also the girls� basketball chaperone.
On August 7, 1959, Doris was united in marriage to LaVerne "John" Schuning at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Janelle, Craig, and Trent.
Doris taught for many years in the Harlan Community School District until her youngest child was born. She then became a full-time mom. She later returned to work in the Harlan School District as a teacher�s aide, office assistant, and playground teacher until she retired in 2000. Even today, former students refer to her as their favorite playground teacher.
Doris enjoyed quilting with the gals at the Senior Center, reading, and playing solitaire on the computer. She loved traveling, especially to Texas in the winter months and just this past winter, to Arizona. Her grandkids were important to her and she attended all of their activities. She canned vegetables and was an excellent cook and loved to share her goodies with family and friends. She was an active volunteer for the Bloodmobile, American Cancer Society board, Relay For Life committee and Hospice. She and John helped a lot of people through the years by driving them to treatments, visiting, and offering encouragement. She took school pictures every fall for many years, did clerical work for the church and was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
Some of her favorite times were taco night at the Westphalia Clubhouse and the daily Burger King coffee club. For many years she did beautiful artwork and gave her paintings away to family and friends who still cherish them today.
Doris died on Monday, July 14, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center having attained the age of seventy years, one month, and thirteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband John Schuning of Harlan, Iowa; their children: Janelle and her husband Kurt Musfeldt of Harlan; Craig Schuning and his wife Karla of Shawnee, Kansas; and Trent Schuning and his wife Traci of Portsmouth, Iowa; five grandchildren: Chelsea Musfeldt; Thane Schuning and his wife Nicole; and Taylor, Tifani, and Taryn Schuning; her sisters: Myrna and her husband Fred Anthony, Jr. of Pella, Iowa and Jean and her husband Richard Woods of Trenton, Missouri; her brother Dale Niklasen and his wife Betty of Kimballton, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends. She will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, July 17, 2008 with Pastor Steven Chellew conducting the 10:30 AM service at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Chelsea Musfeldt, Taylor Schuning, Tifani Schuning, Taryn Schuning, and Nicole Schuning. Serving as casket bearers were David Pope, Thane Schuning, Scott Woods, Jerrad Popp, David Niklasen, Jim Hansen, Mark Anthony, and Danny Schneider. Interment was held in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
