Dorothy Irene Petersen was born on September 26, 1923 to Rasmus and Johanna (Hansen) Johansen in Elk Horn, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. Dorothy attended school and received normal training before teaching at a country school.
She was united in marriage to F. M. "Pete" Petersen at the Naval Air Station in Ottumwa, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union: Michael and Steve. She loved being a mother and keeping up with her sons� activities.
Dorothy worked as a clerk and bookkeeper at Coast to Coast hardware store. She retired in the mid-1980's and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Dorothy and Pete moved to Nevada, Iowa, with their son in the summer of 2011. It was there that she died on Friday, January 25, 2013 having attained the age of eighty-nine years, three months, and thirty days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Michael, brothers Everett, Waldo, and LeRoy Johansen, and sister Elsie Juel.
She is survived by her husband Pete Petersen of Nevada, Iowa; son Steve Petersen and his wife Carrie of Nevada; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother Robert Johansen and his wife Nelda of Chariton, Iowa; sister Mildred Warren of Audubon, Iowa; daughter-in-law Nancy Petersen of Solon, Iowa; other family members and friends.
Pastor Steven Chellew officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. Music was provided by Marge Ahrenholtz and Diane Kastens. Honorary casket bearers were Charlie Gearhart, Shirley Knudtsen, and Doris Towne. Serving as casket bearers were Charlie Trailer, Gordon Von Ahsen, Tim Lakers, Jeff Trailer, Mert Kastens, and Robert Lewis. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
