Dorothy Mae Jacobsen was born on May 27, 1926, to Harry and Clara (Bonneson) Michaelsen in Audubon, Iowa. She was confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. She attended school in Walnut, Iowa, and graduated from Walnut High School.
On May 4, 1946, Dorothy was united in marriage to Delmon Jacobsen in Troy, Kansas. Two children were born to this union: Darrell and Dianne.
Dorothy was a homemaker when the children were little and eventually began driving a truck with her husband until his unexpected death in 1985. She worked as a waitress in Avoca for a few years.
She enjoyed reading and was very good at embroidery; making blankets and quilting. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and was very close with them.
Dorothy was a lot of things: meticulous, organized, independent, stubborn, but mostly she was a devoted wife and mother.
Dorothy died on Thursday, November 5, 2009, having attained the age of eighty-three years, five months, and nine days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Delmon, and her son Darrell.
She is survived by her daughter Dianne and her husband Larry Ehlers of Persia, Iowa, grandchildren: Tammy and her husband Mike Eberl of Underwood, Iowa, Jason Ehlers and his special friend Jennifer of Minden, Iowa, Shela Jacobsen of Avoca, Iowa, and Michael Jacobsen of Oakland, Iowa, great-grandchildren: Landon and Jessica Eberl, Austin Ehlers, Christian, Gia, Jordan, and Josh Jacobsen; daughter-in-law JoAnn Jacobsen of Avoca, Iowa; brother Eldon Michaelsen and his wife Nettie of Walnut, Iowa; half-sisters Carleen and her husband Jerry, Linda, and Ruth; and half- brothers Gary and his wife Vicki, and Harry Jr.; other family members and friends.
Pastor Dennis Reich officiated the 1:30 PM memorial service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa, on Saturday, November 7, 2009.
