Dorothy Catherine Mulligan was born on August 2, 1915 to Chris and Meta (Fahrengrog) Plagman in Kirkman, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She graduated from Hancock High School and went on to beauty school in Des Moines, graduating in 1937. She returned to Harlan and ran a beauty shop for seven years.
On February 14, 1942, Dorothy was united in marriage to Hugh Mulligan at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. The couple had three children: James, Richard, and Judy.
The family lived on Hugh�s farm south of Defiance while Hugh farmed with Dorothy�s help. She raised the children, milked cows, fed hogs, and enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers. She also enjoyed embroidery and quilting and made quilts for each of her grandchildren. Dorothy loved dancing and playing cards, especially Canasta and 500.
Dorothy and Hugh retired from farming in 1977 but continued to live on the farm until 1988. At that time, they moved into Defiance. Dorothy remained there after Hugh�s death in 1992. In 2005, she became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan. It was there that she died on Friday, October 21, 2011, having attained the age of ninety-six years, two months, and nineteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Dorothy is survived by her sons James Mulligan and his wife Sheryl of Gladstone, Missouri and Richard Mulligan and his wife Diane of Defiance, Iowa; daughter Judy and her husband William Stuck of Omaha, Nebraska; nine grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sister Alice Wyant of St. Joseph, Missouri; other family members and friends.
Rev. Chris Fontanini celebrated the 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial with concelebrant Rev. Don Bruck on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at St. Peter�s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. John Rosman accompanied vocalist Maryalyce Dotzler. Serving as casket bearers were Mike Mulligan, Rick Mulligan, Andy Mulligan, Jeff Stuck, Ray Janacek, and Ryan Stuck. Interment was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Defiance.
