Dorothy Helen Schechinger was born in Earling, Iowa, on February 13, 1909, to Joseph and Mayme (Glawinski) Stephany. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. She grew up in Earling and attended the St. Joseph Catholic School in Earling.
She was united in marriage to Joseph J. Schechinger on November 20, 1927, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Four children were born to this union: Gladys, Mildred, Bill, and Sandra. Dorothy was a mother and a homemaker throughout her life. She canned vegetables from her garden, baked a lot of homemade bread, cooked for the hired hands and did their laundry. Dorothy and Joe made their home and raised their children on the farm until 1960 when they retired and built a house on Baldwin Street in Harlan. Even after renting out the farm, Dorothy continued to keep track of all business matters relating to the farm.
Dorothy’s hobbies included making ceramics, gardening and flowers, knitting and crocheting and playing cards. She also enjoyed her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, and even four great-great-grandchildren. After the death of her husband, she liked to travel when she could.
Dorothy remained in the home that she and her husband built until 2001, when she became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan.
Dorothy died on Friday, January 19, 2007, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-seven years, eleven months, and six days. Her beloved husband Joe preceded her in death in 1966, as well as her son-in-law, Gary.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Gladys and husband Leroy Anastasi of Harlan, Iowa, Mildred and husband Charles Behrendt of Harlan, Bill and wife Kay Schechinger of Yantis, Texas, and Sandra and her deceased husband Gary Stamp of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; her brother Paul and wife Phyllis Stephany of Harlan, thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, January 22, 2007, with Rev. Bob Hoefler officiating the 11:00 AM service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Serving as casket bearers were Jeff Stamp, Joe Schechinger, Pat Behrendt, Vicki Fagan, Mary Jo Sondag, Mike Behrendt, Barbara Evans, and Brian Stamp
