Dorothy Irene Shannon
October 7, 1921 — July 21, 2018
Dorothy Shannon, daughter of Ransome and Gertrude (Smith) Barry, was born October 7, 1921 on a farm west of Woodbine, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the Woodbine Methodist Church. Dorothy attended country school in Harrison County and after the family moved in 1936 to a farm west of Irwin, she attended Irwin High School graduating in 1939. Dorothy enrolled in Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls to obtain her teachers certificate and in the summers took classes at Simpson College. She taught in the rural schools 6 years and 1 year in consolidated school.
On March 17, 1946 Dorothy was united in marriage to William Shannon at the Methodist Church in Irwin, Iowa. They farmed north of Irwin where they became the parents of five children: Denny, Bonnie, Rodney, Janice and Joan. Dorothy was a member of the Irwin Church for 34 years and after moving to Harlan became a member of the Methodist Church. She held various offices in the United Methodist Women's group, and received the Special Recognition Pin in both places. While in Harlan she delivered Meals on Wheels and Communion for the Shut Ins. Dorothy was a member of the Jefferson Community Club for over 60 years and also her and Bill had a lifelong group of couple friends that would get together to celebrate birthdays.
She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren helping them out in anyway she could. She enjoyed everyone being at home for "get togethers", especially around the holidays. Having a knack for gardening and cooking she prepared delicious meals and no one left her house hungry or without being served at least two rounds of desserts.
Dorothy and Bill moved to the Independent Living Condos at Elm Crest in Harlan in 2013 when Dorothy's health started to decline. They continued to live there until Bill's death in April of 2018. After his death, Dorothy moved into the Senior Living Community at Elm Crest in Harlan where she passed away on Saturday, July 21, 2018 attaining the age of ninety-six years, nine months and fourteen days. In addition to her parents, Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Bill Shannon, infant daughter Bonnie, two brothers Owen and Dwayne.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Denny Shannon and his wife Diane of Boone, Iowa; Rodney Shannon and his wife Noreen of Manilla, Iowa; Janice and her husband Maury Salz of Honey Creek, Iowa; Joan Shannon of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren Ted Shannon; Jeff Shannon; Jill and her husband Nick Neumann; Lindsay Shannon; Christopher Shannon; Erica and her husband Nathan Stueve; Scott Shannon and his wife Megan; three great grandchildren Drew Neumann; Madrone Shannon; Erin Neumann; a great granddaughter on the way; brother Milton Barry and his wife Ruth Ann of Harlan, Iowa; nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.
