On February 14, 1948, Dorothy was united in marriage with James F. Slater in Carroll, Iowa. Their union was blessed with five children: Dennis, Steven, Becky, Tom and Curtis. After selling her business she continued to help Margaret on a part-time basis until retiring. She spent her retirement years in Denison. Dorothy loved sewing, making clothes for her children, and in addition to her floral career, did mending and alterations for family and others in the community.
