Dorothy Rose Sonderman, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Miller) Rosman, was born on February 12, 1917 in Defiance, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. Dorothy attended school at St. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Defiance, graduating in 1931. She then attended Iowa Teacher’s College in Creston, Iowa, where she obtained her teaching certificate in elementary education. Following graduation, Dorothy taught school in rural Shelby County, Iowa.



Dorothy was married to Albert Sonderman on October 26, 1936 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Defiance. Together they farmed in rural Earling, Iowa, until retiring in 1977 and moving into a new home in Earling where they enjoyed entertaining family, relatives, and friends. They were lifetime members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earling. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Over the years, Dorothy enjoyed her family, first and foremost, her home, gardening, cooking, baking, quilting, embroidery, crochet, playing Scrabble with her grandkids and playing cards and winning. She was blessed with many friends.



Dorothy died on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-seven years, eleven months, and twenty-nine days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Albert on May 10, 1994, son Robert, great-grandson Justin Assmann, and all of her brothers and sisters: Adelaide Schiltz, Edith Assman, Urban Rosman, Irene Wilwerding, Marie Earl, Roman Rosman, Elizabeth Dressen, Leonette Kenkel, John Rosman, Julia Heller, Myra Klahs, and Althea Sweeney.



She is survived by her children: Pauline and her husband Ronald Wilwerding, Diane (Robert deceased) of Earling, Iowa, Patricia and her husband Robert Gross, and Sara and her husband Richard Graeve, all of Omaha, Nebraska, Constance and her husband Timothy Cumberland of Columbus, Nebraska, Samuel Sonderman and his wife Shiela and Jacolyn and her husband Gerald Bogler all of Earling, Iowa; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends to cherish her memory.
