Duane was born October 10, 1957 in Shelby County, Iowa as the son of Wilbur Carroll and Dorothy (Schultz) Carroll. He graduated from AvoHa Community School in 1976, playing football, baseball and basketball for the AvoHa Vikings. He attended Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa receiving a degree in Tool and Dye. He was self-employed as a farmer before marrying Lynne Kaufman on June 28, 1980 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Harlan, Iowa. Together they established their family farm, raised four children in Knox township.
Duane was an active member of 4-H during his elementary and high school career. He was also an active volunteer with several organizations including 6 years at Trinity Lutheran Church's Sunday school puppet program as Captain Good Guy and Cosgrove. He was an avid blood donor to the American Red Cross, member of the Trinity Lutheran Church Council for three years respectively. Duane was a bus driver for A-H-S-T/A-H-S-T-W for 24 years. He always greeted the kids with a smile and regarded his passengers on Bus #8 as his "precious cargo." He loved to joke with them but safety always was his first concern with his kids and they knew he meant business. Duane was also a sports lover! He was the #1 fan of all A-H-S-T-W sports whether or not he had a child or grandchild participating. Dewey was always eager to help and encourage kids in any sport. He loved his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes, Kansas City
Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Steelers. Duane loved the country life, and above all his family.
