Edith Irene Gustafson was born on January 3, 1925 to William and Mildred (Morrison) Rutledge in Herman, Nebraska. She and her sisters Barb and Willa were raised in Washington County. De graduated from Oakland, Nebraska High School in 1942.

In 1943 De moved to Los Angeles, California to work for Bank of America. In 1944, De entered active service in the United States Navy as a Seaman First Class. She did her training at USN Training School in the Bronx, New York, and was stationed at the US Naval Barracks, Receiving Station and Navy Yard in Washington D.C. she was honorably discharged in 1946 with the WWII Medal of Victory.

Upon returning back to Nebraska she married Alvin J. Gustafson on November 10, 1946. They were blessed with four children: Richard, Alva, Ron and Randy.

In 1951 they moved to the Avoca area to start farming. Edith was the bookkeeper for Berthusen Furniture and then Fullerton Lumber before working in Transportation until her retirement in 1987.

De passed away at her home on Friday March 13, 2015 having attained ninety years, two months and ten days. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Alvin.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Richard Gustafson and his wife Patricia of Weimar, Texas; Alva and her husband Steve Reilly of Riverside, California; Ron Gustafson and his wife Allison of Norwalk, Iowa; and Randy Gustafson and his wife Lea of Council Bluffs, Iowa; ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren; sisters Barb Adams of Denver, Colorado and Willa Schunning of Omaha, Nebraska; other relatives and friends.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Legion Post #227 in Avoca where she was a member.
