Edna Alma Haas was born on June 15, 1922 to Adolph and Johanna (Nielsen) Haas on a farm near Jacksonville, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville. She attended country school at Jackson No. 9 through the eighth grade and eventually earned her GED while living in Colorado.
Before moving to Colorado in 1944, Edna worked as a hired girl for area families. Once in Colorado, she worked sewing sleeping bags for the GI’s. After World War II ended, she worked for Wright and McGill in Greeley, Colorado snelling fish hooks for seventeen years. She spent the next four years cooking at a college in Greeley before going to work at Bailey’s where she sewed mens’ and boys’ jeans.
Edna enjoyed bowling, watching kids’ softball games, collecting bone china miniature animals, and reading the Family Circus cartoons.
Edna returned to her home state and eventually became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan where she died on Thursday, December 19, 2013 having attained the age of ninety-one years, six months, and four days. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: James, Russell, and Donald Haas; and brothers-in-law Dewey Larson and Morris Gilmore.
She is survived by her sisters: Ruby Larson of Maple Grove, Minnesota and Amy Gilmore of Denver, Colorado; brother John Haas and his wife Hertha of Harlan, Iowa; sisters-in-law Dorothy Haas of Harlan, Iowa and June Haas of Kimballton, Iowa; other family members and friends.
Pastor Steve Chellew officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Jerry Haas, Donna Nelson, Debra Billings, Larry Haas, Lori Schaben, and Michael Haas. Interment was at Immanuel Cemetery in Kimballton, Iowa.
