Edna Christine Sampson, the daughter of William and Marie Noelek Thies, was born on October 13, 1915 on her parents farm outside of Denison, Iowa. She was baptized on November 7, 1915 and confirmed on January 28, 1935 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. She attended country school near Denison and worked on her parents farm helping her dad with the chores and field work.
On her 20th birthday, Edna was united in marriage to LeRoy Sampson on October 13, 1935 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They farmed in the Denison and Jefferson areas until 1952 when they moved to a farm south of Walnut, Iowa. They were the parents of eleven children. In 1956 they moved to a home in Walnut where Edna was active in being a Brownie leader for her girls when they were growing up. She was a longtime member of the Walnut Legion Auxiliary and also served as their Chaplain. She was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Walnut where she remained very active. Edna had a strong faith and always a smile on her face. She was always thinking of others and would bake a loaf of bread for any occasion and she made a quilt for many babies born. She was a "grandma" to whomever walked in her front door. Edna moved to Avoca in 2004 to live in the Senior Apartment Complex. She lived there until November 30,2007.
Edna died on December 4, 2007 at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa having attained the age of ninety-two years, one month and twenty-one days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband LeRoy who died in March 1985, her son Robert who died in April of 1969; one grandson; one great grandchild; son-in-law Thomas Willie; sisters: Emma Vetter and Ella Thies and brother Walt Thies.
Survivors include her children: David and his wife Carol of Hancock; John and his wife Kay of Walnut; Arnie and his wife Carol of Avoca; Mary Willie of Folsom, Louisiana; James of Walnut; Wayne and his wife Darlene of Neola; Susan Libby of Walnut; Walter and his wife Barb of Walnut; Martha and her husband Randy Hargens of Walnut and Joseph and his wife Margaret of Elliott; twenty nine grandchildren; forty-five great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; two sisters: Bertha Neuman and Anna Lackmann, both of Denison, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, December 7, 2007 at 1:00 PM at the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Walnut, Iowa with Merlene Ostebee as the officiant. Serving as casket bearers wee Ryan Hargens, Sean Sampson, Michael Sampson, Desmond Armentrout, Johnny Sampson, Rob Sampson, Jason Sampson and Kevin Sampson. Interment was at the Layton Township Cemetery, Walnut, Iowa.
