Edward J. Miller
September 6, 1928 — April 7, 2015
Edward John Miller “Ed” was born on September 6, 1928, the son of loving parents, Frank and Mary (Jurgensmier) Miller in Panama, Iowa. Ed was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Panama. After school, Ed served in the Army from 1951 - 1953 and was stationed overseas in Japan during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, Ed returned to the family farm in Panama.
Ed was united in marriage to Helen Springman on October 6, 1954, in Portsmouth, Iowa. To this union, they were blessed with nine children: Kathy, Randy, Dave, Bev, Marge, Joe, Larry, Mary and Amy.
Ed was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the American Legion Post No. 547 in Portsmouth. Ed devoted thirty-seven years of his life to farming, raising his children and teaching them the values of the Lord, hard work, commitment and loyalty. Ed was proud to pass along his farming knowledge to his sons. In his retirement, he could be found watching over the farm operation and visiting the farm at every opportunity. Ed and Helen enjoyed traveling, spending time with their children and grandchildren and attending their many activities.
Ed passed away peacefully at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at the age of eighty-six years, seven months, and one day. Although he will not be walking beside us on this earth, he now has the pleasure of meeting his Savior at the gates of Heaven. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorothy Miller, brother Francis Miller, daughter-in-law, Lisa Miller, other beloved family members and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of sixty years, Helen Miller of Portsmouth, Iowa; his nine children: Kathy (Bryan) Sanford of Des Moines, Iowa, Randy (Becky) Miller of Portsmouth, Iowa, Dave Miller (Lisa Schwery) of Portsmouth, Iowa, Bev (Dan) Schwery of Westphalia, Iowa, Marge (Steve) Denton of Avoca, Iowa, Joe (Vicki) Miller of Portsmouth, Iowa, Larry (Cindy) Miller of Harlan, Iowa, Mary (Dennis) Pauley of Panama, Iowa, and Amy (Jed) Jensen of Spirit Lake, Iowa; twenty-eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; sisters: Helen Monahan of Woodbine, Iowa; Marie Monahan of Harlan, Iowa, and Theresa (Merle) Kenkel of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and many other relatives and friends.
