Edward Rohlfs was born on March 21, 1943, to Rev. Frederich and Thelma (Lewis) Rohlfs in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He grew up in Avoca, Iowa, where he graduated from Avoca High School with the Class of 1961. Ed enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in Hawaii for four years. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Iowa to work and attend Junior College in Clarinda, Iowa.
On July 3, 1966, Ed was united in marriage to Joan Graves in the Presbyterian church in Manning, Iowa. While on their honeymoon, they visited the campus of BYU and started classes that fall. Ed graduated with a Bachelor�s Degree in Education and taught Industrial Arts in Utah, Washington, and Iowa. In 1974, he decided to return to the military, where he served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Unimak, home ported out of Yorktown, Virginia. He later became an MK-A-School Instructor at the Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown.
In 1978, as a reservist, he served as Office-In-Charge of the Search and Rescue station in Milford Haven, Virginia. His military career, including both active duty and reserves spanned thirty-two years.
After his active duty in the Coast Guard, Ed worked at Newport News Ship Building Company in Newport News, Virginia. He worked in various roles and capacities in the construction of Navy nuclear powered aircraft carrier and submarine construction. He retired in 2004 after twenty-five years at the shipyard.
During retirement, Ed and Joan enjoyed Rving. They spent summers at Skookum TV Resort near Newport, Washington. They also have a home in Toquerville, Utah, where Ed spent his time target shooting, walking his dog, Anggie, and visiting with neighbors.
Ed died suddenly on Friday, January 1, 2010, in Saint George, Utah, having attained the age of sixty-six years, nine months, and eleven days. He was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Joan Rohlfs of Usk, Washington, his son Eric Rohlfs and Trisha Johnson, grandson Porter Rohlfs, his mother Thelma Kennedy, brother Fred Rohlfs, other family members and many friends.
A funeral service was held on Friday, January 8, 2010 at the LDS Chapel in Toquerville, Utah. Burial was held in the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca, Iowa. Arrangements were handled by the Metcalf Mortuary in Hurricane, Utah, and Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa.
