Edwin "Gene" Eugene Monson, was born on July 11, 1940 to Sven Edwin and Edna Mae (Poynter) Monson. He attended Irwin-Kirkman Community School where he played football, basketball, baseball, ran track and was also active in FFA and 4-H. He graduated with the Class of 1958. In September of 1959, Gene was inducted into the United States Army and served actively for six months at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Dix, New Jersey before being released to the Iowa National Guard.
He was married to Charlene Kay Elmquist on March 6, 1966 and together they bought a 320-acre farm south and east of Irwin, where Gene spent his life farming. They were blessed with two sons: Jason and Jeffrey. Gene served on various boards involving farming and was active with his church. In 1972, he, along with three others, bought the Crouch Elevator in Irwin, renaming it to Farmers Elevator. Gene enjoyed hunting and golfing and especially enjoyed attending any sporting event to watch his grandchildren participate.
Gene died on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at Elm Crest Assisted Living having attained the age of seventy-five years, two months and twenty-six days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Charlene.
He is survived by his sons, Jason Monson and his wife Michele of Irwin, Iowa and Jeff Monson and his wife Kristen of Urbandale, Iowa; five grandchildren: Alana, Eli, Owen, Acacia “Casey”, and Reese; brother Cyrus Monson and his wife Marolyn of Irwin; special friend Myrna Havick; other family members and friends.
