Edwin Albert Michels was born on January 30, 1927 to Fred and Agnes (Schmidt) Michels in Portsmouth, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Portsmouth and graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Earling, Iowa.
On June 13, 1945, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in Guam during World War II. He was honorably discharged on January 12, 1947. He re-entered the Air Force on March 26, 1956 and served as a jet mechanic until his second honorable discharge on March 25, 1960.
On November 5, 1958, Edwin was united in marriage to Joan McClendon in Great Falls, Montana. They became parents to seven children: Kathy, Cindy, David, Teresa, Steve, Sheri, and Christi.
Edwin was involved in farming, raised milk and beef cattle over the years, and also did carpentry work. He retired from farming in 2006 but continued his hobby of raising peanuts which he did for thirty-eight years.
His hobbies included photography and building model airplanes. He attended numerous air shows but his favorites were when the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds were flying. He was a member of the American Legion.
Edwin died on Monday, August 4, 2014 having attained the age of eighty-seven years, six months, and five days. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Audrey Kreutzer, and brothers Raymond, Herbert, and Vincent Michels.
He is survived by his wife of nearly fifty-six years Joan Michels of Earling, Iowa; children: Kathy Michels of Canton, Texas, Cindy Kennel of Twisp, Washington, David Michels of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Teresa and her husband Terry Baxter of Omaha, Nebraska, Steve Michels and his wife Colleen of Lincoln, Nebraska, Sheri Michels and her fiancee Shawn McCool of Harlan, Iowa, and Christi Adams of Harlan, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
