Elaine Bernice Doonan was born on August 5, 1918, to Hans and Tena (Petersen) Jacobsen near Redline, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, where she remained a life-long member. She attended school at Jackson No. 2 in Jacksonville but left her junior year to help her dad on the family farm.
On March 22, 1939, she was united in marriage to Earl Doonan at her church in Jacksonville. One son, Ron, was born to this union.
Elaine kept busy on the farm with her large garden, canning and freezing what she grew, her flower garden that flourished under her green thumb, and raising about 500 setting hens to sell eggs and broilers that she butchered. She also raised basset hounds for a few years.
She watched her grandsons and enjoyed making homemade Play Doh for them, always making it look brand new the next morning no matter how mashed together the boys got the colors!
Earl and Elaine spent a lot of time camping and fishing. They loved to travel and did so quite a bit but Elaine was always ready to be home again.
Her other hobbies included putting puzzles together and reading. She read through the Bible three times. She was a member of the neighborhood knitting club and always had egg salad sandwiches, lime pickles, and chocolate chip cookies ready for company
After Earl’s death in 2004, Elaine sold the acreage to her grandson and moved into the Westridge apartments. She had recently moved to Elm Crest Retirement Home where she died on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, having attained the age of ninety-one years, eleven months, and one day. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
She is survived by her son Ron Doonan and his wife Peggy of Jacksonville, Iowa; her grandsons Trent Doonan and his special friend Christine Birney of Winterset, Iowa and Troy Doonan and his wife Kelly of Jacksonville; great-grandchildren: Amanda, Megan, Nathan, Madison, and Tyler; brothers-in-law Ralph Doonan and his wife Shirley of Alexandria, Minnesota and Norman Scott of Manilla, Iowa; other family members and friends.
Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Friday, July 9, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. Cindy Hanson was the musician. Serving as casket bearers were Wayne Petersen, Barney Ahrenholtz, Monte Hansen, Verle Doonan, Nate Ahrenholtz, and Carl Petersen. Interment was held at the Jacksonville Cemetery.
