Eldred “Mick” Keane was born on September 3, 1931 to Thomas and Matilda (Maiwald) Keane in Panama, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he remained a life-long member. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School with the Class of 1949.
On March 8, 1951, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in Hawaii. He received an honorable discharge on March 8, 1955 and returned to Panama to assist on the family farm.
On April 4, 1956, Mick was united in marriage to Marilyn Schwery at St. Mary’s in Panama. They became parents to eleven children: Dick, Deb, Dave, Diane, Jerry, Jeff, Ron, Bob, Kathy, Karen, and T. J. After their marriage, they continued to farm the family farm outside of Panama.
Mick was active in the American Legion of Panama and served as Legion Chaplain. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Earling Council No. 1741. He was active in the church and served on the Parish Council, the 4-H Extension Council, and he enjoyed playing cards with his friends. He was always the first to show up if any friend, neighbor, or family member needed a hand, showing his faith by his actions.
Everyone was always greeted with a smile by Mick; he was a man of integrity, preferred to lead by example, and found good in everyone. He gave unconditional love to his children and grandchildren and taught the meaning of respect, love, and friendship through his daily actions and devotion to his life-long love and wife, Marilyn.
