Eleanor Marie Arentson Allen was born on June 11, 1920 to Martin and Vina (Nelson) Arentson on a farm in Lincoln Township, Shelby County, Iowa. She attended elementary school at Lincoln Township No. 5 and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1938. After graduation, she taught for two years at Lincoln Township No. 5 before attending Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Marysville, Missouri, for one year, and then taught the following year at Lincoln Township No. 6.

On January 10, 1942, Eleanor was united in marriage with Ted M. Allen at a Baptist church in Marysville, Missouri, and went to live on the Allen farm north of Corley, Iowa. To this union four sons were born: Stephen Rae, Joseph Craig, Jeffrey Lynn and Samuel Dean. Ted and Eleanor lived and worked on the family farm until 1973 when they moved to Harlan for the next five years. They moved to Marysville for one year in 1979, and then returned to Harlan. They moved to Elm Crest in 1995.

Eleanor accepted Christ as her personal savior at the age of nine and was a life-long Baptist church member. She served her church in many capacities, most notably as a long-time Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School teacher. Eleanor loved to work with children, was a member of the Corley Social Club for many years, and often assisted with Bloodmobile drives. She was proud of her pin for donating 10 gallons of blood during her life.

Eleanor died at her home in Harlan at the Elm Crest Apartments on Friday, August 30, 2013 having attained the age of ninety-three years, two months and nineteen days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Ted in March of 2005.

Eleanor is survived by her four sons: Stephen Allen and his wife Jane of Basking Ridge, New Jersey; Joseph Allen and his wife Karen of Bryan, Texas; Jeffrey Allen and his wife Linda of Rogers, Arkansas and Samuel Allen and his wife Jill of Clayton, North Carolina; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Rosalie and her husband Glenn French of Harlan; brother Dale Arentson and his wife Phyllis of Eldridge, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
