Elizabeth Agnes Rau was born on February 13, 1907 to Bernard and Theresa (Anastasia) Zimmerman in Lincoln Township near Westphalia, Iowa. She attended St. Boniface school in Westphalia.
On November 13, 1934 she was united in marriage to Frank Rau at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. They became parents to three children: David, Harvey, and Dan.
Elizabeth was a homemaker and kept busy raising her children, tatting, knitting and crocheting, and embroidering. She was in the sewing circle for over seventy-three years. She enjoyed cooking and baking and gave homemade buns to everyone. She served as president of the Rosary Society and sang in the St. Boniface Choir.
Elizabeth was a resident of Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa when she was admitted to Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan where she died on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 having attained the age of one hundred six years, two months, and twenty-five days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank, son David, grandsons Gary Rau and James Rau, sisters Cecilia, Olga, and Marie, and brothers Joe and Bill.
She is survived by her sons Harvey Rau and his wife Janice of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Dan Rau and his wife Gladys of Harlan, Iowa; daughter-in-law Jan Rau of Harlan; thirteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; eleven great-great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
Rev. John Dorton celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Gloria Schmitz accompanied vocalist Gary Zimmerman. Honorary casket bearers were Julia Rau, Kaylynn Zeltner, Cheryl Wilhite, Lisa Frieze, Michelle Launderville, and Kathy Hueser. Serving as casket bearers were Brian Rau, Ken Rau, Robert Rau, Jeff Rau, Sef Daystrom, and Jason Rau. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia.
