Elizabeth B. Hansen, second daughter of Edwin G. and Myrtle (Baughman) Robertson, was born on September 16, 1915 on a farm in Shelby County, Iowa. Elizabeth was one of four children, having had two sisters and one brother. She went to school for the first seven grades in Washington Township #3 near Panama, Iowa and then moved to Dunlap were she graduated in 1932. She enjoyed her school days and especially participating in the marching band, orchestra, and concert band. Elizabeth went on to Van Sant�s Business School in Omaha and received her diploma. She first worked for Thomas J. Beckley, Attorney at Law and later Powers and Gilchrist, attorneys in Denison. She later worked as a clerk at Coast to Coast and Farner�s Store in Harlan for many years.
She was married to Woodrow Hansen on August 26, 1937 in a double wedding with her sister Laurel and Woodrow�s brother Emory at the Dunlap Methodist Episcopal Church. They lived their entire married life in Harlan. She and Wutz celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1997.
Elizabeth joined the Dunlap Methodist Episcopal Church and took an active part in the Methodist Youth Fellowship. During her first years of married life she joined the Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan and was baptized in 1939. She then became a charter member of the First Baptist Church in Harlan and has considered the members her extended family. At one time she served as Deconess and she and Woodrow served as co-helpers for the Baptist Youth Fellowship. She was a member of the Baptist Home Auxiliary for many years and served as Den Mother for years with the Cub Scouts.
Elizabeth died on Saturday, August 23, 2008, at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, having attained the age of ninety-two years, eleven months, and seven days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Woodrow, her son Ron, her sisters: Laurel Hansen and Jean Christiansen and one brother Edwin Robertson.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law Vi (Ron) Hansen of Lincoln, Nebraska; her sons: Phillip Hansen and his wife Jill of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Byron Hansen and his wife Nan of Rockton, Illinois; seven grandchildren: Kimberly and her husband Bill Booth of Niskayuna, New York, David Hansen and his wife Andrea of Newport, Rhode Island, Michelle and her husband Tim Stortz of Olathe, Kansas, Heidi and her husband John Savoy of Olathe, Kansas, Josh Hansen and his wife Renee of Harlan, Iowa, Ben Hansen and his wife Jeana of Austin, Texas, and Jonathan Hansen and his wife Jessica of London, England; fourteen great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; other family members and friends. Elizabeth was a loving wife and mother and will be missed by all who knew her.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at First Baptist Church with Pastor Walt Bernard leading the 10:30 AM service. Casket bearers were Craig Christiansen, Bryce Hansen, Lynn Christiansen, Tom Hansen, Bob Hansen, and Duane Errett with interment held at the Harlan Cemetery
