Elizabeth Betty Schmidt
February 18, 1939 — October 26, 2008
Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Schmidt was born on February 18, 1939 in Harlan, Iowa, to Godfrey "Fred" and Loretta (Herrig) Goeser. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. She attended St. Boniface Catholic School graduating with the Class of 1957.
On September 17, 1960, she was united in marriage to Eugene "Gene" Schmidt at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Five children were born to this union: Julie, Steven, Shelli, Connie, and Staci.
Betty worked at Moon�s Variety Store in Harlan until her first child was born. She stayed home to raise her children until her youngest daughter entered first grade. Betty then went to work at Myrtue Memorial Hospital where she worked in the Dietary Department for twenty-seven years, retiring in 2006. She made many life-long friendships with the kitchen gals.
Betty enjoyed getting together with her family and grandkids and always made sure that there was more than enough food and goodies for all to enjoy. She loved spending time tending her flowers and had a knack for making them grow beautifully.
Betty died on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, having attained the age of sixty-nine years, eight months, and eight days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Steven, and her sister Bernetta.
She is survived by her husband Gene Schmidt of Harlan, Iowa; her children: Julie and her husband Mark Brehmer of Spencer, Iowa, Shelli and her husband Brett Sherer of Spring Hill, Iowa, Connie and her husband Mike Kienast of Harlan, and Staci Miover of Des Moines, Iowa; eleven grandchildren: Melissa and her husband Matt Heidesch of Ankeny, Iowa, Brian Sherer and his wife Kelcy of Evans Mills, New York, Jackie Fear and Devin Brehmer of Spencer, Iowa, Beth Sherer of Dubuque, Iowa, Andy Sherer of Spring Hill, Iowa, Carly, Emily, and Brogan Kienast of Harlan, and Jordan and Joshua Miover of Des Moines; her brother Bob Goeser and his wife Pat of Crescent, Iowa, sister Colleen and her husband Dick McLaughlin of Harlan, brother-in-law Larry Ulrich of Council Bluffs, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, with Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrating the 11:00 AM service at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Casket bearers were Mike Kienast, Dan McLaughlin, Matt Heidesch, Brett Sherer, Tyler Heck, and Russ Goeser. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
