Ella Clara Stamp, daughter of Edward Benjamin Horstmeyer and Clara Henrietta (Hiller) Horstmeyer, was born on March 8, 1932, in McClelland, Iowa. She was baptized on April 14, 1932 at St. John’s Evangelical Reformed Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa and attended Hardin Township Number One Country School west of McClelland.



As a girl she walked to school carrying a syrup pail containing her lunch. She played Jacks, Checkers, Paper Dolls, Hide and Seek, Annie Over, Ring Around the Rosie, I Spy, Fox and Geese in the Snow, Rummy, Canasta, and Solitaire.



Ella grew up helping on the family farm milking eight cows by hand before going to school. She cleaned the barn and the cream separator, fed hogs, horses, hens and baby chicks, picked up eggs, and bucket fed the calves. Ella separated milk and cream by a hand separator, ironed clothes with a flat iron that was heated on the cook stove, churned butter with a wooden churn, and shelled corn with a steel corn sheller. She also darned socks and patched overalls with her Grandma Hiller.



For entertainment there were ball games, croquet, horseshoes, rollerskating, listening to a battery operated radio, and free picture shows. She loved dancing and met her “husband to be” Bud while roller skating.



On January 15, 1951, Ella was united in marriage to Alden “Bud” Stamp at St. Johns Evangelical Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union: Jerry and Steve. After their wedding, Alden and Ella made their home southwest of Persia where Alden rented 160 acres of farm ground. Ella loved to dance and especially loved dancing the polka with Bud.



Ella served as a lay person at the Food Pantry, a Peer Counselor, St. John’s Lutheran Church Altar Committee, Secretary of Senior Citizens, substitute manager and then Manager at the Persia Meal Site, also working at the Funeral Home in Persia.



In the 1970's, Ella received her GED from Harlan and went on to get her CNA from Iowa Western Community College. In 1982, Alden and Ella retired from farming and moved into Persia. In 2004, they moved to Harlan.



Ella died on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa having attained the age of eighty three years, one month and ten days. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Alden “Bud” Stamp, sisters Elsa Burhenne and Erma Nihsen, and brother Bernard Horstmeyer.



She is survived by her sons Jerry Stamp and his wife Diane of Avoca, Iowa and Steve Stamp of Persia, Iowa; two grandsons Jerod Stamp and his wife Margaret, and Jordan Stamp; two great grand daughters, Joslyn and Maggie Stamp; twin brother Elmer Horstmeyer of Loveland, Colorado; other family members and friends.
