Elvera L. Brus was born on a farm in Morgan Township, Schleswig, Iowa April 26, 1912, the daughter of John and Lizzie Bendixen Wiedemann. She was baptized at Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig July 28, 1912 and confirmed there April 1, 1928. She was raised in the Ida County area and received her education at the Hayes Township Number 9 rural school. On January 20, 1937, Elvera was united in marriage with Hugo Herman Brus at Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Their union was blessed with three children: Verdell, LaJune and Karen. They made their home on a farm near Manning, Iowa until 1942 when they moved to their farm west of Denison. In 1959, Hugo and Elvera moved to Denison maintaining an active interest in the farm. Hugo died January 30, 1993 and Elvera continued to make her home in Denison. In 2003 Elvera moved to the Reed House in Denison where she resided until moving to Eventide in 2009. In her spare time she enjoyed fishing, quilting, gardening, playing cards, doing crafts, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. It didn’t matter when you showed up at her house she always put something on the table for you to eat. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Elvera died at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison Thursday afternoon, February 28, 2013, having been blessed with 100 years, 10 months and 2 days. Including her parents and her husband, Hugo, Elvera was also preceded in death by three sisters, Lavina Wiedemann, LaJune Obrecht and Milda Schiernbeck; and children, Verdell Brus and Karen Knudson. Those remaining to cherish her memory include her daughter LaJune and husband Martin Magill of Perry, Iowa, daughter-in-law Carol Brus of Denison, Iowa, son-in-law John Knudson of Robinson, Kansas, 7 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, sister Ardene Yeargan of Denver, Colorado, sisters-in-law: Edna Lohrmann of Denison, Iowa and Marie Brus of Manning, Iowa, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 4, 2013, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa, with the Rev. Chris Burtnett officiating. Music for the service included two congregational hymns, “To God Be The Glory” and “How Great Thou Art” and a recorded vocal selection of “The Lord’s Prayer”. Tammy Neubauer served as organist for the services. Those serving as pallbearers included Scott Brus, Jeff Brus, Todd Brus, Shaun Magill, Bruce Knudson and Dan Brus. Interment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Denison, Iowa. Immediately following the funeral service at the church the family invited everyone to join them for fellowship and a meal prepared and served by Staley’s Food Service and the United Church of Christ Women’s Guild.
