Elvin Almer "Red" Hansen was born on June 26, 1924 in Harlan, Iowa, the only child of Almer and Nina (Grabill) Hansen. He was raised on a farm near Redline, Iowa and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1942.
On March 26, 1945, he was united in marriage to Violette Marie Sutton in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Two children were born to this union: Susan and James.
With the exception of one year (1950) as a semi truck driver in Iowa City, Iowa and one year (1952) at Lockheed Aircraft Plant in Burbank, California, where he riveted the wings on President Dwight D. Eisenhower�s plane, Red worked as an automobile mechanic his entire life, first for Vandenberg Motors, then for thirty-two years at Roecker Ford Motor Company in Harlan. He retired in 1986.
His favorite pastime was bass fishing, which he enjoyed throughout his life and retirement.
Red died on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, having attained the age of eighty-six years, ten months, and fourteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
He is survived by his daughter Susan Steinkuehler of Smyrna, Georgia; son James Hansen and his wife Sheryl of Bellevue, Nebraska; four grandchildren: Kathryn and David Wells of King George, Virginia, Michelle and Mike Reis of St. Louis, Missouri, Daniel and Terry Steinkuehler of Canton, Georgia, and Deanna and Rick Burroughs of Gardner, Kansas; seven great-grandchildren: Ashley, Dustin, & Caitlyn Reis, Lindsey Davidson, and Dillon, Derrick, and Conner Burroughs; other family members and friends.
Rev. Dr. David Swinton officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Friday, May 13, 2011 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Don Calender, Kenneth Petersen, Jamie Hockett, Steve Grabill, Rick Petersen, and Norval Larson. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
