Elvira Anna Miller was born on March 8, 1921 to Nicholas and Anna (Bieker) Finken in Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling and also attended school at St. Joseph’s Catholic School.
On October 6, 1942, she was united in marriage to Sylvin Miller at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. They became parents to seven daughters: Joanne, Karen, Linda, Connie, Charlotte, Mary, and Julie. She loved being a homemaker and a mother and volunteered as a 4-H leader when her daughters were young. For many years she worked as a nurses aide at the Little Flower Haven nursing home in Earling.
She enjoyed quilting and sewing, playing bingo at the church on Wednesday nights, and doing a little gambling now and then. Mostly, she loved visiting with her family and friends and being able to spend time with her many grandkids.
Elvira was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Katherine, #266 of Earling.
She became a resident in 2010 at the Little Flower Haven nursing home in Earling, where she died on Sunday, March 1, 2015, having attained the age of ninety-three years, eleven months, and twenty-one days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Anna; husband Sylvin; daughter Linda Schiltz; brothers: Walter, Larry, Mac, Rusty, Ray, Vic, and Frank Finken; sister Elsie Assman; and sons-in-law John Grady, Ron Hutchison, and Bob Schiltz.
She is survived by her children: Joanne Grady of Harlan, Iowa, Karen Hutchison of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Connie and her husband Don Reischl of Gretna, Nebraska, Charlotte and her husband Ron Willenborg of Manning, Iowa, Mary and her husband Bob Bissen of Earling, Iowa, and Julie and her husband Pat Rogers of Omaha, Nebraska; twenty-three grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; sister Mildred Retz of Hesperia, California; brother-in-law Francis Miller of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; other family members and friends.
