Erma Martha Peters Dorfler was born January 20, 1914, to Fred and Emma Blunk Peters on the family farm near Charter Oak. She was raised on the farm and attended the Charter Oak Lutheran School through 8th grade. She then attended Charter Oak high school for two years and after, continued helping her father on the farm. On February 6, 1935, Erma was united in marriage with John A. Dorfler at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with one son, John M. Dorfler. They made their home on the family farm north of Ricketts where they lived until John’s passing in 1996. Erma continued to live on the family farm by herself until just before her death. She was an active part of the family farm and loved working with livestock, especially sheep. Erma was a very active person in the Ricketts community. She was highly involved in the Ricketts Steam Shows in the 1970s. She assisted with The Iowa Bicentennial for Crawford County and helped obtain the Bicentennial award for Ricketts in 1976. In 1999 she was chosen to represent Ricketts as the Queen of the Ricketts Centennial. In 2001 she was presented with the Leadership Award from the Ricketts Community. Erma loved gardening, collecting antiques, parades, reading, and also enjoyed style shows with vintage clothing. Erma died Tuesday night, October 15, 2013 at the Denison Care Center. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 99 years, 8 months and 25 days. Those remaining to cherish her memory are her son, John Milo Dorfler of Charter Oak, IA; grandsons: John Andrew (Darci) Dorfler of Cedar Rapids, IA, and James Milo (Jennifer) Dorfler of Ankeny, IA; three great grandchildren: Megan Dorfler, Allison and Jack Dorfler and a host of friends, especially Linda Hanson and Dylan Huston. She was preceded in death by her husband John A. Dorfler, her daughter-in-law Lois Dorfler, and her parents, Fred and Emma Peters.
