Erna Johanna Lange was born on March 17, 1914, two miles west of Jacksonville, Iowa to Johannes and Bertha (Nielsen) Jacobsen. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville. She attended country school through the eighth grade at Jackson No. 4 then her parents moved to Harlan and she graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1932.
She worked at Pauley Funeral Home for four years after high school. In 1941, she was united in marriage to Claude Roberts and lived in the Jacksonville area. She worked for two years at the Jacksonville telephone office on the switch board before they moved to Webster City.
