Erwin Ferdinand Sieh was born at the family farm west of Avoca, Iowa on February 22, 1923. He was one of two sons born to Ferdinand “Ferd” and Ella (Rock) Sieh. Erwin attended Country School in Pleasant Township District #1. In high school he played baseball and graduated from Avoca High School in 1940. He was the Class of 1940 Salutatorian and Class President.
He was drafted into the Army in January 1943. He trained at Camp Beale and Camp Young in California. He served in Burma, China and India. He was with the 209th Combat Engineers “c” and Merrill’s Marauders during WW II.
Erwin married Martha Nielsen from Elk Horn, Iowa on June 8, 1947 at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church. They started farming a mile south of the Sieh home place in 1947. Erwin and Martha were the parents of two sons - Mark and Alan.
Erwin was a life member of Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, and original member of the 1944 Merrill’s Marauders. He served as Commander of Avoca Post 4279. He was able to attend a Freedom Honor Flight in September 2008 to Washington D.C.
Erwin farmed west of Avoca all of his life. He raised livestock - cattle and hogs and grain crops of corn, beans and oats.
Erwin and Martha along with ten other couples belonged to the 4th of July Bunch and Labor Day Club for almost fifty years. He was a Detroit Tiger Baseball fan, he enjoyed collecting coins and hunting and trapping with his family. What he really enjoyed most was attending and watching almost all of his grandchildren’s sporting events.
Erwin died on Monday, June 6, 2016 having attained the age of ninety three years, three months and fifteen days. Erwin and Martha were married for sixty eight years when she passed away on January 25, 2016. He was also preceded in death by his parents and brother Elmer.
Erwin is survived by his sons Mark and wife Bonnie of Avoca, Iowa; Alan and his wife Bobbi of Avoca, Iowa; Five Grandchildren: Eric and his wife Angela Sieh ; Kelly and her husband Kyle Mallicoat; Jill and her husband Nate Weathers; Ashley and her husband Brant Melvin; and AJ Sieh; Four Great Grandchildren: Morgan Sieh, Wyatt Sieh, Grady Maillicoat, and Elizabeth Melvin.
