Ethel Margaret Peters was born on May 31, 1919 to Niels and Agnes (Koenig) Nielsen in rural Walnut, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the English Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa on March 20, 1932. She attended school in Bentley, Iowa and graduated from Underwood High School in Underwood.
She married John Barrett and they had five children: Robert, Richard, Nancy, Ricklef, and George.
Ethel was united in marriage to Vernus Peters on October 22, 1954 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. The couple had three children: Susan, Kent, and Ned and they also raised Vernus�s daughter from his first marriage, Kathy.
Ethel enjoyed music and played the Dulcimer in a local music group. She worked as a waitress and she also worked at the Avoca Creamery as an accountant. She was a gifted artist and painted many portraits and landscapes and she also taught art classes.
Ethel raised her children and enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved her family and spending time with them.
Ethel and Vernus moved to the Avoca Lodge in 2009 and on July 19, 2011 Ethel moved to the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center. Ethel died at Myrtue Medical Center, while on hospice care, in Harlan, Iowa on Friday, April 27, 2012 having attained the age of ninety-two years, ten months and twenty-seven days. Along with her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and George Barrett; granddaughter Lisa Barrett; and sister Anna Short.
She is survived by her husband Vernus Peters of Avoca, Iowa; their children: Robert Barrett and his wife Sandra of Lewisville, North Carolina, Nancy and her husband Jim Robertson of Nampa, Idaho, Ricklef Barrett of Mishawaka, Indiana, Kathy (Peters) Armendariz of Omaha, Nebraska, Susan her husband Jeff Tabler of Medford, Oregon, Kent Peters and his wife Lynn of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and Ned Peters and his wife Kelly of Harlan, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
Wayne Paulsen officiated the 2:00 pm funeral service on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Burial was held at Graceland Cemetery in Avoca with Ethel�s grandchildren: Aaron Barrett, Shane Armendariz, Nicole Brandes, Carrie Peters, Adam Peters, Nicholas Peters, Nathan Barrett, Heather Barrett, Tiffany Barrett and Sidney Barrett serving as casket bearers.
