Catherine Ethel Miles was born on February 10, 1928 to Alex and Theresa (Windeshausen) Von Tersch in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church where she remained a lifelong member. Ethel attended Harlan Community Schools and graduated with the Class of 1946.
On September 13, 1946, she was united in marriage to Jay Dean Miles. They became parents to seven children: Bonnie, Connie, John, Janice, Mary, Carol, and Peggy.
For twenty-five years she worked as a housekeeper for one of the local motels, but her favorite job was being a homemaker and raising her children. Some of her favorite times were taking camping trips to Missouri and South Dakota.
Ethel never learned to drive a car but was always willing to help the driver. She attended her grandchildren’s events, loved to shop, especially at garage sales, but never went out without her lipstick. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxilary and a fan of rock and roll music but liked to listen to all types of music.
