Eugene Jakie Larsen, son of Leonard and Alice (Petersen) Larsen, was born October 16, 1932 on the family farm near Kirkman, Iowa. Eugene grew up attending Polk Township #6 Country School. He graduated from Harlan High School.
On May 18, 1953, Eugene enlisted into United States Army during the Korean War. He served his country honorably until April 30, 1955. He earned a National Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany) and Good Conduct Medal.
On December 18, 1955, Eugene was united in marriage to Arletta Jean Schlicht at Merrill’s Grove Church in Fiscus. Four children were born to this union: Ronda, Brenda, Linda, and Rod. Eugene had a dairy farm on the family farm and worked as a hired hand to several neighbors. He also worked with a bridge crew, CDS Global and Ohlinger Lawn Care, until he retired in 1997. He was a long time member of Merrill’s Grove Church in Fiscus and First Baptist Church in Elk Horn, Iowa. He was an active member of the Shelby County Gideon Society.
Eugene died at his home in Kirkman on Thursday, January 4, 2018, attaining the age of eighty-five years, two months and nineteen days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife Arletta, and brother Roger Larsen.
He is survived by his children Ronda Long of Des Moines, Iowa; Brenda and her husband Tim Kustka of Billings, Montana; Linda and her husband Larry Ohlinger of Harlan, Iowa; Rod Larsen of Kirkman, Iowa; six grandchildren: Angela Harvey, Jenny Long, Alisha Redfern, Ashley, Allison, and Amy Kustka; two great-grandchildren Penelope and Piper Harvey; sister Marilyn and her husband Don Sorensen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
