Eugene F. Rasmussen
June 4, 1936 — September 10, 2013
Eugene Frederick Rasmussen, son of Frederick and Christine (Christiansen) Rasmussen, was born June 4, 1936 on a farm near Walnut, Iowa. Gene was baptized and confirmed in The Immanuel Lutheran Church. He moved with his family to a farm near Tennant, Iowa where he grew to adulthood and attended Tennant High School graduating with the class of 1954. Gene then joined the U. S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Antietam in the Mediterranean Ocean.
After receiving his honorable discharge from the Navy, Gene returned to Shelby County where he farmed and held different jobs around Harlan. On November 25, 1961 he was united to Peggy Thygesen at the Harlan Church of Christ. In 1979 he was baptized in the Harlan Church of Christ where he became treasurer and song leader, positions he held for over 30 years.
He continued to farm the family farm raising hogs and sheep. He loved animals and loved to travel as long as it wasn�t for too long or too far. His choice of cars were Fords and Ford vans and his red 57 Chevy. His health gradually declined and was forced to stop farming when he was no longer able. He was a mentor to many young people and served as an example of Christian life.
Eugene died on September 10, 2013 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa having attained the age of 77 years three months and six days.
He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife Peggy of Harlan, Iowa, his brother Lawrence and his wife Doris Rasmussen and his sister Patricia Knudson, both of Harlan, Iowa many nieces and nephews other relatives and many friends.
The 2:00 PM funeral service was officiated by Roy North and Tom Krause on Friday, September 13, 2013 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Song Leader was Greg Gear. Honorary casket bearers were Phyllis Plumb, Grace and Lynn McCord, Brent Rasmussen, Tom Thygesen, Camelia and Gary Jorgensen, and Richard Jorgensen. Serving as casket bearers were Rodney Knudson, Gaige Knudson, Corey Knudson, Jim Thygesen, Bill Thygesen, and Bill Lambert. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
