Eugene "Gene" R. Rosman was born on April 28, 1921 on a farm near Harlan, Iowa, to Rudolph and Clara (Hofer) Rosman. He attended Lincoln Township No. 4 through the eighth grade and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1938. After high school, Gene began his farming career with his father. They farmed together for twenty-one years before his father retired in 1959.
Gene was united in marriage to Marion Konz on January 13, 1962. They met at a dance in Omaha sponsored by the Chi Rho Organization of the Catholic church. Two children were born to this union: John and Mary. They raised their family on the farm that had been in the Rosman family for sixty-nine years and later purchased the land from his father in 1972.
The land and its stewardship were important to Gene. Lessons in farming were learned from his father and passed down to his son John. Gene was very innovative and was never afraid of adopting new techniques into their operation. Long days on the farm were rewarded by being able to spend time relaxing and fishing at their cottage at Lake View, Iowa. Gene also was able to go on fishing trips in Minnesota and Canada.
On the farm, Gene was able to fix and repair most of the equipment himself. He was an excellent welder and mechanic. He also enjoyed spending time in his wood working shop where he made picture frames, miniature log cabins as well as a miniature motor operated mill. He was a card player, especially pitch, and sponsored a special Mass in the name of St. Isadore, the patron saint of farmers, on the farm for several years. Gene was an active member of St. Michaels Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council No. 3900 of Harlan.
On August 6, 2010, Gene became a resident of Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa and it was there that he died on Monday, October 4, 2010, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, five months, and six days. With the exception of the last two months, Gene spent his entire life on the farm that has been in the Rosman family since 1906. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and his brothers: Myron, Richard and Norman.
Gene is survived by his son John Rosman of Harlan, Iowa; daughter Mary and her husband Paul Zdechlik of Edina, Minnesota; three grandchildren: Grace, Charlie and Amelia; his sister Joanne and her husband Bernard Lapke of Dunlap, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
Rev. John Frost celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Harlan. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery with Leo Lapke, Dean Coenen, Pat Kirlin, Bill Rosman, Steve Rosman, Rudy Rosman, Tom Lapke, Ron Rosman, Jamie Rosman, Mike Konz and David Konz serving as casket bearers.
