Eugene Nicholas "Gene" Schoemann was born on May 10, 1927, to Chris and Sophia (Blum) Schoemann in Portsmouth, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. He attended Pleasant Ridge Country School and graduated from St. Mary�s Catholic High School.
He enlisted in the United States Army on September 15, 1950 and served until his honorable discharge on September 14, 1952. He met Thelma Louise Campbell while stationed at Restone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. They were married on February 12, 1953 in Portsmouth, Iowa. Eleven children were born to this union: Tony, Steve, Greg, Dave, Ann, Pat, Barb, Jeff, Janet, Rita, and Bill.
After his discharge from the Army, he became a truck driver and drove in and around the Portsmouth area for twenty-five to thirty years. He looked forward to springtime every year so he could begin his gardening and mushroom hunting. He raised popcorn and loved the family fishing trips to Minnesota. Traveling all over the United States to visit his children and grandchildren was also a major joy in his life.
He enjoyed the family card games (Hearts was his favorite) and the famous Pitch games at The Rocket in Portsmouth. Being part of the American Legion and the Volunteer Fire Department was a very important time in his life.
He died on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan having attained the age of eighty-three years, six months, and twenty-eight days. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons Tony and Steve; two grandchildren; one great grandchild and sisters, Elaine and Josephine.
Gene is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years Thelma Schoemann of Portsmouth, Iowa; children: Greg Schoemann and his wife Denise of Ceres, California, Dave Schoemann and his wife Dale of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Ann Mellinger of Harlan, Iowa, Pat Schoemann of Portsmouth, Barb Kleymann of Persia, Iowa, Jeff Schoemann and his wife Velvet of Avoca, Iowa, Janet and her husband Danny Sharp of Huntsville, Alabama, Rita Griffen of Portsmouth, and Bill Schoemann of Tahoka, Texas; twenty-three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters: Grace Pauley of Panama, Iowa, Sister Mary Schoemann of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and Ceil and her husband Vic Langer of Arvada, Colorado; brothers John Schoemann of Portsmouth and Father Bob Schoemann of Des Moines, Iowa; other family members and friends.
Rev. Robert Schoemann celebrated the 10:30 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth. Honorary casket bearers were Matthew Griffen, Avery Dozier, Ethan Jorgensen, and the Portsmouth American Legion Post No. 547. Military Rites were conducted by the Portsmouth American Legion Post No. 547 in St. Mary�s Cemetery in Portsmouth with Joe Schoemann, Nathan Harris, Michael Schoemann, Jeremy Schoemann, Chris Kleymann, Michael Rowedder, Cameron Behrens and Theo Behrens.
