Evelyn Crane

Evelyn D. Crane was born in Des Moines, Iowa, July 7, 1924, the only child of Emmett Orin and Rosa Patava Groves. When she was a small child the family moved to Port Angeles, Washington, where she was raised and graduated from high school. During high school and prior to her marriage she was employed at a local five and ten cents variety store. On November 7, 1943, Evelyn was united in marriage with Dale Crane at Port Angeles, Washington. Their union was blessed wife five children: Larry, Ron, Dan, Lynn and Mark. They made their home in Port Angeles until Dale’s tour of duty in the service was completed. Following Dale’s discharge they resided briefly in California, Texas and South Carolina before settling in Vail, Iowa, in 1945 where they raised their family. During her working years Evelyn was employed at the Vail Lumber Company, their family business, Crane Feed and Fertilizer and for the United States Postal Service in Vail and Carroll from which she retired. In her leisure hours Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her family, playing Euchre, sewing, quilting, traveling and winters spent in California. She was a member of Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, and the United Presbyterian Church in Vail where she was an Elder, Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the Women’s Circle and Willling Workers Quilters. In August of 2009, Dale and Evelyn moved to the Reed House in Denison, Iowa, and it was there her death occurred Wednesday afternoon, December 7, 2011. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 87 years and 5 months. Including her parents, Evelyn was also preceded in death by one grandson, Brian Crane, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Beldon and Rosa Crane, brother-in-law, Everett Crane and wife, Bernice, and sister-in-law, LaVerne Slechta and husband, Irvin. Those remaining to cherish her memory include her husband of over 66 years, Dale Crane of Denison, Iowa, five children: Larry Crane and wife, Marla of Denison, Iowa, Ron Crane of Roseville, California, Dan Crane and wife, Wendy of Vail, Iowa, Lynn Ross of Denison, Iowa, and Mark Crane and wife, Dee of Woodward, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 2 step-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
