Evelyn Alma Nelsen was born August 31, 1916 to Fred and Emma (Ingwersen) Holtz on a farm near Avoca, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the German Lutheran Church and attended school at Avoca. After her schooling, Evelyn stayed home to help on the family farm and care for her ailing sister, Ella.

On April 19, 1943, Evelyn was united in marriage to Nels Nelsen. To this union five children were born: Karen, Sandy, Beverly, Lowell and Cheryl. She stayed at her parents farm while Nels was stationed in Alaska. After his discharge, they bought a home in Avoca where she worked at the Beverly Enterprises Nursing Home, which later became the Colonial Manor where she worked twenty years as a nurses aide until 1984 when she retired. Evelyn and her family then became members of the Trinity Lutheran Church after the German and English Lutheran Churches merged.

She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers, especially African Violets. In her free time you would find her quilting queen size quilts for her children, grandchildren and baby quilts for her great-grandchildren.

Evelyn died on March 14, 2015 at the Oakland Manor Nursing Home in Oakland, Iowa attaining the age of ninety eight years, five months and fourteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Nels, two daughters Sandy Popp and Beverly Wirth, her siblings Ella Rock, Leona Jorgensen, Herb Holtz, Alvin Holtz, Raymond Holtz, Freddie Holtz, Hazel Krueger and Frances Hodges.

Evelyn is survived by her children: Karen and her husband Steve Guyer of Hancock, Iowa; Lowell Nelsen and his wife Kathy of Vancouver, Washington and Cheryl and her husband Larry Billings of Hancock; seventeen grandchildren; thirty eight great-grandchildren; sons-in-law Eldon “Butch” Popp of Walnut, Iowa and Lynn Wirth of Avoca, Iowa; her brothers Delno “Bud” Holtz and his wife Betty of Avoca and Clarence Holtz and his wife Betty Jean of Denver, Colorado; brother-in-law Melvin Hodge and his wife Lola of Atlantic, Iowa; sister-in-law Lillian Flaherty of Arizona; nieces and nephews; other relative and many friends.
