Evelyn Pearl Paulsen, daughter of George and Daisy (Claessens) McIntosh, was born on December 29, 1908, at her grandparents� home in Irwin, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Irwin in 1920 and attended school in Irwin and Odebolt, Iowa and graduated from Odebolt High School. After school, Evelyn began teaching in Sac County for one year before moving with her parents to Minneapolis, Minnesota where she attended the University of Minnesota.
When Evelyn came back to Iowa to visit her grandparents, she was asked to teach at Rabbit Hollow Rural School and Center #4. She remained in Iowa to teach and in the late 1950's, she also tutored children for the county.
On August 26, 1931, Evelyn was united in marriage to Robert O.H. Paulsen at the First Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Three children were born to this union: Virginia, Barbara, and Tom.
Evelyn was active in the 4-H and was also a 4-H leader for eight years. She was also a Jackson Township Committee Woman and a Shelby County Republican Chairwoman.
Evelyn�s special interests were traveling with her husband, Bob, throughout the North America; ballroom dancing with Bob; and collecting rocks and shells. Evelyn always picked up rocks and shells when she was out traveling or just on her daily walks.
Evelyn moved into Harlan in 1982 and it was here that she died at Elm Crest Retirement Community on Saturday, September 5, 2009, having attained the age of one hundred years, eight months, and seven days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob; and her sisters: Opal Johnson, Virginia Bakke, and Wilma McIntosh who died in infancy.
She is survived by her children: Virginia and her husband Raymond Hughes of Beverly Hills, Florida; Barbara and her husband Harry Budd of Ames, Iowa; and Tom Paulsen and his wife Ruth of Harlan, Iowa; six grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan. Rev. Dave Swinton officiated the 11:00 AM service with burial at the Harlan Cemetery with Lisa Sosso, Sandy VanDeventer, Harry Budd, and Curt Bladt acting as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were: Tom Budd, Jim Budd, Elden Paulsen, Bobby Paulsen, Steve Hughes and David Hughes.
