Evelyn "Bern" Whiteing was born at Dunlap, Iowa, October 27, 1925, the daughter of William Noel and Elizabeth Lucille Pearl McCoid. The family resided at Dunlap until Evelyn was age 11 when they moved to Arion, Iowa. She received her early education in Arion before attending Denison High School. On June 7, 1947, Evelyn was united in marriage with Albert William Whiteing at Hiawatha, Kansas. Their union was blessed with seven children, Karen, Kay, Albert, Jr., Robert, Raymond, Charles and William. They made their first home together at Vail, Iowa, later moving to Omaha, Nebraska where they resided until 1966. Prior to returning to Arion in 1980 they made their home in the communities of Dow City, Glidden, Vail and Denison. In addition to raising her family Evelyn was employed through the years as a cook at Trucker?s Terminal Café in Omaha, Nebraska, Eat-Mor Café in Denison, Denison Care Center and J. C.?s Prime Rib and Dew Soni?s in Dow City. Mr. Whiteing died December 1, 1989 and Evelyn continued to make her home in Dow City. In 1994 Evelyn moved to Honey Grove, Texas, where she resided until returning to Arion in 2000. In her spare time she enjoyed watching John Wayne movies, knitting, fishing, and maintaining her photo albums, especially her many photos of her grandchildren. She was happiest when surrounded by her family. While residing in Texas she was a member of the Honey Grove VFW Auxiliary. In January of 2008, Evelyn moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. Evelyn died Thursday afternoon, March 13, 2008, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 82 years, 4 months and 16 days. Including her parents and her husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by one son, Robert Whiteing, two grandsons, Peter Fitzgerald and Trevor Bonenberger, twin great grandsons, Jerimiah and Isaiah Whiteing, son-in-law, Lawrence "Larry" Bonenberger and two brothers, Emory and Eugene "Keith" McCoid. Those remaining to cherish and honor her memory include seven children, Richard McCoid and wife, Linda of Dow City, Iowa; Karen Bonenberger of Louisville, Nebraska; Kay and husband Charles Fitzgerald of Blanchester, Ohio; Albert Whiteing, Jr. and wife, Karen of Arion, Iowa; Raymond Whiteing and wife, Kathryn of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Charles Whiteing and wife, Shelly of Roland, Iowa; and William Whiteing of Holdenville, Oklahoma, 21 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, six siblings, William McCoid of Dow City, Iowa; Wilma and husband, Don Grow of Dayton, Iowa; Alice Brink of Savoy, Texas; Barbara and husband, David Smith of Missouri Valley, Iowa; Donald McCoid of Arion, Iowa; and Clinton McCoid of Texas, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 17, 2008, at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison. Music for the service included recorded selections of "Amazing Grace" "The Lord?s Prayer" and "How Great Thou Art". Honorary Pallbearers included Alex, Jason, Austin and Courtney Whiteing and Patrick and David Fitzgerald. Pallbearers were Devlun and Joshua Whiteing, Jeff and Steve Blunk, Bill McCoid and Richard Tabor. Interment was at the Dow City Cemetery, Dow City, Iowa. Following the interment the family invited all in attendance to join them at the Arion Community Building for lunch and a time of fellowship.
