Fairl Chastine “Sonny” Johnson
Fairl Chastine “Sonny” Johnson was born to Fairl and Jewel Johnson on July 6th, 1930 in Wellston, Oklahoma. While growing up, he attended school and lived in Guthrie, Oklahoma. After school, Fairl went into the Army and served in the Korean War.
Fairl found the love of his life when he met Marilyn Olson. They were united in marriage on December 10, 1954 and made their home in Guthrie, OK. After getting married, Sonny started working at the creamery. Soon after, he went to work with family members for Midwest Pipeline. Their family traveled with the pipeline. They settled in Cubero, New Mexico, where Sonny worked at the Uranium Mine. After 4 years of living in New Mexico, their family returned back to Harlan, Iowa where Sonny and Marilyn met years before. While living in Harlan, Sonny worked for the City of Harlan Utilities as a boom truck operator. He retired in 1993. Sonny was an avid outdoors man. He received numerous local and state awards in archery. Sonny enjoyed all aspects of hunting and has passed his love for hunting on to his grandsons. Also was an avid golfer. He participated in the Senior Circuit for a number of years. He enjoyed golfing with his “buddies”, his brothers and his brother-in-laws. A special spot for family and friends to enjoy conversation and stories was on the front porch of the house where Sonny and Marilyn made their home.
Sonny and Marilyn were married for 68 years. Fairl passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at his residence at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa surrounded by family. Sonny attained the age of 92 years, 8 months and 15 days. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fairl and Jewel Johnson.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Johnson of Harlan, IA; children, Peggy Kramer (Wayne Nelson) of Harlan, IA, Michael (Sandy) Johnson of Hawkeye, IA; 5 grandchildren: Nicole, Tony (Desirae), Nathan (Tiffany), Mitchell (Abby), Katie (Tyler); 15 great-grandchildren; 4 1/2 great-great grandchildren; extended family Bruce and Carolyn Blum family; Isaac; many other family and friends.
